– Is it how he can lead?
– Is his/her musicality?
– Is it considered advanced One that has 1 year of experience in social dance parties?
– Is it considered advanced One that has taken 6 months or 1 year of regular
classes?
– Is an experienced dancer the same as an advanced dancer?

  1. Depends how you read the question. When writing “social” this word is for me stronger than “advanced” dancer. Don’t think you can talk about advanced social dancer – either you are a social dancer or not. Advanced indicate a level difference and being social don’t include that. Being a social dancer is a mindset, a state of mind that is deep within your personal character and it is this capability that determine your chance to have fun, practice dance and make new friendships.

  2. IMHO, to be considered an “advanced” social dancer you must be able to adapt to any partner, know the basics of your dance on an “instinctive” level, understand the music and be able to improvise.
This holds true to both followers and leaders.

*Adaptability is one of the most important aspects of social dancing… You rarely know what level your partner will be, are they novices or veteran dancers, how quick are their reaction times, etc.
So, you must always be prepared for anything that comes your way.

*The none of the other points is possible without having solid basics.
A leader must be able to lead almost any follower, and a follower must be able to understand any lead, subtle or assertive.

*A good social dancer has a clear sense of musicality.
What constitutes the music you are interpreting? what rhythms does int consist of? how is the song sung? what harmonies are used?
Knowing “your” music will help interpret it in dancing.

*To keep the dance interesting and musical, a good social dancers must be able to improvise when something unexpected happens.
For me that’s one of the most fun parts of a dance!

  3. When this question – “Who is an advanced social dancer?” – gets asked, one could get really two types of answers.
One – personal opinions on what people think – or more often, who they imagine at their current stage of dance ability development they would ideally like to dance with.
Two – a definition of what it really means to be an advanced dancer from a really experienced dancer.

There is a place for both types of answers but they need to be understood for what they really are. Definitions of the first type get posted on Facebook and blogs all the time. If the “social” out of “social dancing” is what you are after, in those you could find useful tips.
If it is the “dancing” in “social dancing” that you are after and you are looking for pointers which way to progress in your dancing, I would say, try to learn to distinguish between the two types of answers and learn mainly from the second type of answers. One hint that can help to distinguish between the two types of answers is that it would be the first type if there is something in the sense of: “An advanced dancer ´takes care´ of their partner´s mistakes, so that they don´t get to know about them.” If you are after improving your dance skills to the best of your ability to enjoy the best of dancing, the first type of answers can give misleading pointers for this.

My own definition would be quite close to what BB said, so I won´t write it here again.

  4. An advanced dancer has his body under full control and can therefor spend more time on connecting to the music and the partner. He or she has a solide technical Base (leading, following, control of the own Center etc.) wich allows him or her to move in space with ease and a natural expression of emotion. An advanced dancer can take concious decisions while dancing, like reacting to the music, using certain Repertoire, reacting on the needs of the partner. He or she knows the Structure of the dance and can let go and move free inside of it, which make Improvisation and call and responde with the partner possible. Leading is flawless as he knows how to handle the Center of the follower. Following is “in the now” and is not anticipated as the conciousness for the own Center is strong. Repertoire happens from a mixture of muscle memory and concious decision to give the dance viarity in motion.

  5. I think an advanced dancer first of all very much pays attention to its partner and also the music, first of all to have great connection – doesn’t matter whether it is a leader or a follower. If that is given, responsiveness to each other becomes more instinctive, and the whole dance more fluent. From the perspective of the leader: improvisation and using the music, expressing it through dance is an important feature, adding perhaps some shine movements, but never spoiling the dance. Movements are clear and nicely shaped, even the most simple ones.

  6. In my opinion an advanced dancer is not a peacock, who wants to impress his partner or the audience. But he’s a player, who wants to create a magical mood for all. How he does it may vary, but everybody can see that he’s totally aware of what he has to do, to achieve the flow.

  7. My dance: zouk
I think the most remarkable feature of an advanced social dancer is that he/she can make his/her partner feel good and shine on the dance floor.

    Dance technique:
    – has a solid technique: safe, comfortable, beautiful
    – interprets the music in an interesting way
    – can adjust to different musics and different partners very smoothly

    Attitude:
    – has a positive attitude and everybody dares to ask him/her for a dance
    – gives his/her best in every dance and concentrates on the moment trying to make each dance as good as possible
    – pays attention to the surroundings (especially leaders) so that the partner can relax
    – concentrates his/her attention to the partner and concentrates on the connection rather than styling or looking good

In my opinion for social dancing the attitude matters at least as much as dance technique. A beginner guy who only does basic moves with a good technique and comfortable lead can be an awesome social dancer. A very experienced guy can be a very poor social dancer. An advanced social dancer can make the partner forget about everything around him (her) and feel and do things he didn´t know he could do.

    1. I only now noticed that Freddy & Andressa wanted to have a notion of whether the definition is from a girl or a guy. So the comment above starting with “My dance: zouk” (04/03/2015 at 1:22 PM) was by a girl and I was trying to think both as a leader´s and follower´s perspective. 🙂

  8. An advanced social dancer can dance with all kinds of partners (beginners/advanced and a dancepartner who dances another style). He/she adapts to the level/style of his/her dancepartner. He/she can dance differtent kinds of styles and can also feel the music and adapt to the style of music (and speed). An advanced social dancer does not dance the same routine over and over. He/she has a big repertoire and keeps on learning and surprising his/her dancepartner so they are longing for more. He/she connects to his/her partner and knows how to move his/her body so they can move as one. And of course a leader has to be able to lead clear and gentle and a follower has to be aible to wait and follow. Having fun with eachother is also very important.

  9. I’m a leader in Zouk,

An advanced leader is someone who can make it all seem very(!) easy. An advanced leader can do his repertoire on different speeds and still let it look flawless. An advanced leader does not move on his own, he lets the music guide him. An advanced leader is not bound by the amount of time he’s been dancing. He could be advanced after 3 mounts, 5 years, 10 years. An advanced leader does not have to be an experienced leader.

On the other end we have the experienced leader. This guy has posture, has a bigger amount of moves than average, knows how to take care of the lady, can dance with all levels, has floor craft, has brought his leading to a higher level. The experienced leader is bound by time. The more time he spends dancing the better he becomes.

I’m really bad at words and might be missing some clarifying info, but this has been my experience in Zouk. I started and was considered advanced very early already, but I was missing so much(in retro-spect). Now that I’ve gotten some experience I can combine it, but being more aware of everything happening. Comes down to talent VS hard work I guess?

    Regards,

    Random Leader

  10. I feel an advanced dancer is someone that is good at improvisation.
The example I can give is like being able to drive a manual or automatic car, on left or right lane; as well as being able to ride a motorbike or bicycle; drive a lorry or a fire engine. In other terms being able to be adaptable & switch with smoothness & seamlessly into varying different roles with ease.
An advanced dancer must posess the ability to recognise musicality & be aware of the technicalities of the mist delicate of movements necessary to change the balance, curve & direction of their partners steps by being articulate in clear expressions.
In summary leaving a dancer partner content & wanting more better still will a big smile & fond memory of the dance.
